Our summer camp in the Sierra de Gredos, in Spain, is in La Vera, in the foothills of the mountains, a few kilometres from Cuacos de Yuste (Cáceres). It is for boys and girls aged 6 to 12, and in 2027 there are three ways to come: two fortnights in July, one week in June for children leaving home for the first time, and one fortnight in August.
The setting
Summer days are hot, but the nights cool down thanks to the river gorge. It is a nature camp: dips in the river's natural pool during the day, and evenings under the stars at night.
What the children do during the day
Groups are organised by age and do six different activities a day, plus trips out into the countryside, evening activities and excursions. The program includes:
- Climbing, canoeing and archery.
- Hiking and mountain trails, with excursions such as the one to the Trabuquete, which you can see in the videos on the camp page.
- Horse riding and zip wires (these at Valle del Jerte Parque Aventura).
- Football and basketball.
- Drama, workshops and cooking.
- Nature, and dips in the river's natural pool.
After dinner there are evening activities; during the fortnight we hold the Olympics, and there is also a night camping under the stars.
The food is home-cooked with good-quality ingredients, and the children help with some of the cooking. They eat with their room counsellor, and there are options for allergies and intolerances, which you tell us about when you register.
If you would like to add something to the program, you can choose horse rides or English classes when you register; in Gredos these are booked separately.
Three ways to come to Gredos in 2027
All three take place at the same site and are for children aged 6 to 12; what changes is when they run and how long they last.
LayosCamp Gredos, in July
This is the fifteen-day camp, with the full program. In 2027 there are two sessions: from 1 to 15 July 2027 and from 16 to 30 July 2027. The children are split into two age bands: the Eagles, aged 6 to 9, and the Crows, aged 10 to 12.
Kids Camp Gredos, in June
This is one week, from 24 to 30 June 2027, designed for children leaving home for the first time. It takes place at the same site in La Vera, also with Eagles and Crows, at a gentler pace: two hours of activities in the morning and two in the afternoon, a rest after lunch, dips in the natural pool, evening activities and excursions. Once they have tried every activity, each child is free to choose their own.
August in Gredos
This is the session from 16 to 30 August 2027, also for ages 6 to 12, and it has its own page. It offers the same service as July, plus two things only August has: if you are coming from abroad, pick-up at the airport or station is included; and if the session did not reach the minimum group we need to run it properly, we let you know at least 30 days in advance and you choose between a full refund of everything you have paid or moving to another session. In August we also welcome proportionally more international campers: almost half the group comes from outside Spain.
Getting there from Madrid
Return transport from Madrid is included in every session. We ask families to meet us at a meeting point, and the children always travel with their counsellors; we give you the exact meeting point and times after registration. If you prefer, you can also drive your child there yourself.
If your child is flying or coming by train, we pick them up at Barajas airport or at Atocha or Chamartín station. In July this is a separate service; in August it is included.
Who looks after the children
Our counsellors train at our own official counsellor school, which we have run since 1999, and for the summer sessions we do not hire anyone who has not worked with us before. Many former campers now train there. There is also a member of the team dedicated to first-timers, who looks after the children who miss home most. As a family business, there is always a member of the family in charge of the program.
The camp is less than 5 minutes from a medical centre and 15 from a hospital, and all the children are covered by accident insurance.
Phones and calls
On the first day, each camper hands their phone to their counsellor, who keeps it. You can speak to their counsellor from day one, and from the fourth day there is one hour of calls a day, at a time we will let you know: during that hour you can call the camp phone or their mobile.
June, July or August?
- If it is their first time away from home, the Kids Camp in June: one week, at a pace designed for a first stay away.
- If they have spent a night away from home before and want the full program, either of the two fortnights in July.
- If you work in August or are coming from abroad, August in Gredos, with pick-up included and the minimum group guarantee.
